Two Test Positive for Zika Virus, Including a Pregnant Woman

On June 20, a 46-year-old doctor from Erandwane and his 15-year-old daughter were diagnosed with the Zika virus.

Two new cases of Zika virus were reported on Friday, bringing the total in Pune City to five. These include a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Ganeshnagar, Erandwane, and a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa, according to officials.

A senior Public Health Department official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that a 28-year-old pregnant woman tested positive for Zika, while two other pregnant women tested negative. The PMC has been instructed to screen all pregnant women within a five-kilometer radius of Erandwane.

The woman from Ganeshnagar, Erandwane, who is receiving antenatal care at the Late Vishnu Yashwant Tharkude Dispensary on Karve Road, had her samples sent to the NIV on June 26 after experiencing fever and rash. The report confirmed Zika infection on Friday.

The second case involves a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa who had symptoms of fever and body aches. His samples, sent to the NIV on Thursday, also confirmed Zika virus infection. He is the son of a 47-year-old woman from Mundhwa who tested positive on June 1.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer of PMC, reported that out of 13 samples sent to the NIV, 12 were negative. Surveillance activities are ongoing in the affected areas.

Dr. Kalpana Baliwant, health officer of PMC, emphasized the importance of anomaly scans for pregnant women who test positive for Zika virus.
