NIV Scientists to Train Pune Health Staff on Addressing the Zika Virus Threat

According to officials, NIV experts may discuss SOPs to prevent the Zika Virus outbreak in Pune City. Prevention and surveillance activities will be discussed with officials.

In response to increasing concerns about the Zika virus in the city, scientists from the ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune will provide training to health officials of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

This month, the PMC has reported five cases of Zika virus infection, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman from Ganeshnagar, Erandwane, and a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa

PMC health officer Dr Kalpana Baliwant said the training will be held on Wednesday and experts from the NIV, public health department, and PMC health staff will be present for the training.

The training will be conducted online and the guidelines issued by experts for further control and management of Zika virus infection in the city will be considered,” he said.

According to officials, NIV experts may discuss the SOPs to prevent the Zika outbreak in the city. Discussions with the officials will cover containment and surveillance activities.

As part of PMC’s response to keep its population isolated from the new threat, NIV scientists will train us for testing, clinical symptoms, case definition, and sample collection,” PMC officials said.

Dr. Rajesh Dighe, the Assistant Health Officer of PMC, stated that during the training, experts from NIV and state officials will provide guidelines to civic officials.

The guidelines will be followed for our ongoing containment and surveillance activities after Zika virus cases are reported. We have screened over 9,000 people living in Erandwane and Mundhwa after cases were reported from this area,” he said.
